Citrus

Refrigerate oranges and other citrus in a bag for up to 3 weeks. Freeze citrus and zest for recipes.

Storing: Oranges and other citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, and grapefruits can be stored short-term (up to one week) at room temperature. To prolong the shelf life (up to 3-4 weeks) of citrus fruits, keep them in a bag in the refrigerator.

Freezing: Citrus can be frozen in wedges, slices, zest, juice, or whole. By freezing citrus, you can use nearly every part of the fruit and always have it on hand to add to dishes and drinks.

  • Always wash fruit first.
  • Use a microplane to create citrus zest from the peel and freeze in icecube trays or small containers.
  • To freeze whole citrus, place them in freezer bags, removing as much air as possible before sealing.
    • Use whole frozen citrus for juicing.
    • To thaw, microwave for a few seconds, or place the citrus in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes. Slice the fruit and juice.
  • To freeze slices or wedges, lay them out on a cookie sheet and set them in the freezer for a few hours. Once they’re solid, collect them into a zip-top storage bag. Use them directly from the freezer to add flavor to drinks.
