Apple-Pear Crumble

Use those surplus and wrinkled apples and pears to make a simple and tasty crumble!

Wrinked, mealy, and bruised apples and pears don't have to go to waste. Even if they aren't perfect for snacking on fresh, a simple cooking process can transform imperfect fruit into tasty desserts.

This recipe uses apples and/or pears, but you can substitute whatever fruit you have at home that needs to be used up.

Apple and/or Pear Crumble

INGREDIENTS:

Filling

  • 3-4 medium sized apples and/or pears, washed, cored and cut into 1 inch cubes or thin slices (remove peel if desired, but not necessary)
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1Tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup sugar (adjust as desired)

Topping

  • 1/4 cup cold butter (if salted, remove salt below)
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Prepare your filling right inside an oven-safe baking dish by tossing your chopped or sliced fruit with lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and sugar (if desired). Make sure there is at least 1/2 inch of space between the top of the fruit and the edge of the dish for the topping.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, oats, cinnamon, and salt. Cut the cold unsalted butter into pieces and add them to the bowl.
  3. With a fork or your fingers, smoosh the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles a coarse meal, or small crumbles.
  4. Sprinkle the topping over the parepared fruit in the baking dish as evenly as possible, covering all the way to the edges of the dish.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven until the fruit is soft, juices are bubbling, and the crumble is browned.
  6. Allow the crumble to mostly cool before serving as it will help the fruit and juices set. Serve warm and enjoy!
